U.S. Canada NAFTA Freight Is Up From Last Year, But U.S. Mexico Freight Is Down

 

Trucks moved $66.5 billion of freight with North American Free Trade Agreement partners Canada and Mexico in March, up 4.1 percent compared to March 2017. Trucks moved 62.9% of freight between the two countries with rail being the second most popular mode of transport at $16.1 billion of freight.

Trucks moved 57.6 percent of the total freight between the U.S. and Canada, a value of $31.1 billion, and 68.4 percent of the total freight between the U.S. and Mexico, with a value of $35.5 billion .

Compared to March of 2017. U.S.-Canada freight by truck is up 3.8 percent and U.S.-Mexico freight is down 4.4 percent.

The top three states for truck freight moved through their border ports, with a total of 75.1 percent of total truck freight, are:

Texas: $26.3 billion

Michigan: $15.3 billion

New York: $8.3 billion

Rail freight between the two countries totalled 15.2 percent of total freight transported.  17 percent of that was between the U.S. and Canada and 13.4 percent was between the U.S.and Mexico.

U.S.-Canada rail freight is up 11.0 percent from March of 2017 and U.S.-Mexico freight is down 8.0 percent.

The top three states for rail freight flowing through their border ports, with a total of 77.0 percent of total rail freight, are:

Texas: $6.3 billion

Michigan: $4.8 billion

New York: $1.3 billion

A total of $105.8 billion of freight was carried by all modes of transportation, up 5.5 percent from March 2017.
