Cargo theft recording firm, CargoNet, reported a 14% decrease between the second quarters of 2019 and 2018.
Unfortunately for truckers, the decrease isn’t all good news as trailer burglaries continue to trend towards becoming the preferred method for cargo theft.
Food and beverage products were the most stolen commodity in the second quarter of 2019. CargoNet notes that theft of this specific product category has been rising since 2017. More specifically, meat products, alcoholic beverages, and non-alcoholic beverages were the most-stolen items.
Household items were the second-most stolen commodities. However, unlike food and beverage products, household items have seen a decrease in cargo theft over the past few years.
California saw the most cargo thefts in 2019, but overall saw a 28% decrease from 2018.
