New changes to the Ontario Highway Traffic Act are taking effect on July 1st

Ontario is making changes to the Highway Traffic Act to improve road safety. These amendments include a number of new measures to address the issue of impaired driving, distracted driving and to protect vulnerable road users. Some of these amendments take effect on July 1st, and include zero tolerance for Commercial Motor Vehicle Drivers and Novice Drivers for the presence of Drugs and alcohol in their system.

Of note, if a CMV Driver is detected at the road side with the presence of Drugs or alcohol in their system, effective July 1st, their licence will be suspended for 3 days. Fines escalate with each repeat offence and may also trigger mandatory education programs and ignition interlock.
