Wabash National Corp. has expanded its trailer aerodynamic solutions product line with its fifth device designed to significantly improve trailer aerodynamics and fuel economy, the AeroFinโข XL Tail Device.
The AeroFin XL is a lightweight and extremely durable aerodynamic tail device that directs airflow across the rear of the trailer to reduce aerodynamic drag. The device deploys and retracts automatically with swing door operation, requiring no additional interaction from the driver and does not interfere with trailer loading and unloading. It features a more compact design and a lighter weight when compared to conventional designs.
When used in conjunction with Wabash Nationalโs Ventix DRSโข (drag reduction system), the AeroFin XL provides over 10 percent improvement in fuel economy (certified by an independent third party in accordance with SAE J1252 Wind Tunnel Test). Together, the devices are verified as an EPA SmartWay Elite aerodynamic device combination, a new category for the SmartWay Technology program that recognizes devices providing the highest levels of fuel savings.
When used as a stand-alone device, the AeroFin XL provides over 4 percent improvement in fuel economy.
โWe have a responsibility to our customers to continually provide innovative solutions that lower their total cost of ownership,โ said Brian Bauman, vice president and general manager, Wabash Composites. โAfter extensive research, development and testing, weโre pleased to offer the AeroFin XL as another option to help fleets reduce their fuel consumption, operating costs and greenhouse gas emissions.โ
The AeroFin XL is the fourth aerodynamic solution for trailers that Wabash National has introduced this year. Building on the fleet-proven success of its DuraPlate AeroSkirtยฎ, introduced in 2009, Wabash Nationalโs Composites business introduced the AeroFin Tail Device, Ventix DRS, and AeroSkirt CXโข at ATAโs Technology and Maintenance Council Exhibition in February. All products are commercially available.
โAs the leading producer of semi-trailers and liquid transportation systems in North America, we realize there is no single solution that is ideal for every trailer application and customer,โ Bauman added. โThat is why we offer the most complete line of aerodynamic trailer devices in the industry, with product combinations that can yield more than 10 percent fuel economy improvement. Itโs important that carriers understand aerodynamic testing methods and the questions that need to be asked when specifying aerodynamic devices. Our sales team at Wabash National is available to help fleet managers and owner-operators investigate the fuel saving options suitable for their operations.โ
Wabash Nationalโs AeroFin XL and other aerodynamic trailer solutions will be featured at the 2016 TMC.
