Another point of view on speed limiters

The Trucking Alliance, a 2011-formed group of self-billed “progressive” trucking companies, announced this week its intentions to push for quicker work by regulators on an electronic logging device mandate, an expansion of driver drug testing options and a rule to mandate the use of speed limiters on heavy trucks.

The Alliance’s Chairman Steve Williams met with FMCSA Acting Administrator Scott Darling, senior members of the House’s Transportation Committee and Senator John Boozman to update them on his group’s 2015 objectives, the Alliance announced this week.

The group says it would like to see FMCSA produce a Final Rule to mandate the use of electronic logging devices sooner than the November 2015 date it currently projects.
It also hopes to see the agency produce a proposed speed limiter mandate this year, along with allowing carriers to use hair testing to fulfill driver drug testing requirements, rather than urine-only tests.

And, running counter to more established trucking lobbying groups like the American Trucking Associations and the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association, the Alliance hopes to see the DOT raise the minimum amount of liability insurance trucking companies must carry and retain the public nature of Compliance Safety Accountability scores.
