For the most part, politicians hook themselves to some pretty hairbrain ideas and convince good people that it’s right and just. That it simply is the only way to make the world a better place. And for the most part, it’s all smoke and mirrors. More about the ego of the politician than making the world better.
Mayor Jim Watson of Ottawa, is for the most part could be characterized as one of those “speak a lot”; “do as little as possible”; politicians. It’s been said Jim Watson would show up for a letter opening as long as it would get his picture in the paper.
But, Mayor Jim Watson of Ottawa has actually done something that has been a long time coming, a long time necessary, a long time used in other jurisdictions. Mayor Jim Watson is suggesting that under belly safety guards be installed on all trucks so that pedestrians and bicyclists don’t go under the truck and sustain serious injury or death. Will the pedestrians and cyclist get hurt? Probably, but they may not be so seriously injured or killed.
It has taken the death of a young 24 years old woman who met her doom under the wheels of a large truck in downtown Ottawa last week but better late than never. Congratulations to Mayor Jim Watson of Ottawa for presenting a motion to bring this need for safety guards on large trucks to the attention of the Federal Minister of Transport. It is a certainty this is a safety measure each and every trucker can get behind and push for real safety issues.
