January spot market freight volumes up but down

TransCore reports load volumes increased in January, on the heels of four consecutive months of declines.

January spot market freight volumes were up 12% above December but down 28% year-over-year.

The freight index has shown alternate highs and lows for the month of January for the past three years. Compared to December of the prior year, January 2016 was above December 2015; January 2015 was below December 2014, a year of record-breaking highs, and January 2014 was above December 2013, TransCore reports.

Cross-border loads leaving Canada were down 18% and loads coming into Canada were down 33% year-over-year. Intra-Canada load volumes were down 25% year-over-year.

Equipment availability was also lower, reflecting a 5% reduction in capacity compared to December. However, equipment postings were above January 2015 levels by 28%.
