Illinois Aims To Catch Scale Avoiders

โ€œOperation bypassโ€ is a new enforcement campaign from the Illinois State Police aimed at catching truckers who avoid operational weight checks.

At a recent press conference, troopers announced that the goal of the operation is to โ€œreduce personal injury crashes involving commercial motor vehicles and identify unsafe truck drivers and vehicles.โ€

The checks will focus on district 5 and on these 6 weight checks specifically:

  • I-55 (north and south) near Bolingbrook
  • I-80 (east and west) near Frankfort
  • I-57 (north and south) near Peotone

The Illinois State police made it a point to say that โ€œALL vehicles weighing 8 tons (16,000 lbs.) or more shall stop to be weighed. Even if the truck is empty and does not have a load, the driver is still required to stop and be weighed when the scale is open.โ€

In the press release, the police station also made it clear that they will more strictly enforce all other commercial vehicle rules and regulations.

Troopers also said that โ€œdrivers who demonstrate a lack of understanding of their duties and responsibilities while operating a commercial motor vehicle may be subjected to retesting for their commercial driverโ€™s license at their respective department of motor vehicle facility.โ€
