Mercedes-Benz GLC 350e: The PHEV That Hits the Mark on Electric Range

In the evolving landscape of automotive technology, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are increasingly proving to be the sweet spot for many drivers, offering the best of both worlds: efficient electric propulsion for daily commutes and the dependable range of a gasoline engine for longer journeys. While more and more manufacturers are entering the PHEV market, a consistent challenge has been the often-limited electric range.

My own Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe, for instance, offers only about 40 km of electric range, which, while useful, isn’t truly ideal. We’ve seen improvements with models like the RAV4 (70 km), the Outlander PHEV (64 km), and even the impressive Range Rover (84 km). But now, Mercedes-Benz has truly raised the bar with the GLC 350e, boasting an exceptional 88 km of electric range. This is the kind of range that genuinely covers most daily driving needs, offering true peace of mind without constant range anxiety.

Under the Hood: Power, Efficiency, and Quick Charging

The GLC 350e’s impressive performance stems from its sophisticated powertrain. It features a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder turbo engine paired with Plug-In Hybrid technology and a smooth 9-speed 9G-Tronic transmission. The heart of its electric capability is a robust 24.8 kWh battery with DC fast-charging capability. This is a game-changer, allowing the battery to charge from 10-80% in just 20 minutes when using a DC fast charger.

Combined, the system delivers 313 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque, propelling the GLC from 0 to 100 km/h in a swift 6.7 seconds. During my week with the vehicle, its efficiency truly stood out. Thanks to a Level 2 home charger, I only needed to put $4 of gas in the tank, as charging at home was significantly more cost-effective than using public chargers. This highlights the real-world savings a capable PHEV can offer.

On the Road: A Balanced, Capable Drive

The driving dynamics of the GLC 350e are subtly different from its pure gasoline counterpart. The added weight from the battery is noticeable, particularly when accelerating from a standstill, and in pure gas mode, the GLC 350e feels, and is, slightly slower overall than the gas-powered iteration. Mastering the interplay between the gasoline and electric power sources to achieve maximum performance takes a little practice.

You’ll also feel the extra weight when taking corners abruptly, but for most regular driving, the vehicle feels planted and secure. The brakes, while feeling a touch spongy, perform absolutely fine and will inspire confidence for most drivers. Ultimately, the GLC 350e shines as a great daily driven vehicle, perfectly suited for navigating all seasons across Canada.

Trims and Features: Luxury at Every Level

The Mercedes-Benz GLC 350e is available in three distinct trims, ensuring there’s an option for various preferences and budgets:

Standard ($64,900)

Exclusive ($68,700)

Pinnacle ($72,400)

Even the standard trim is generously equipped, featuring self-leveling suspension, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, keyless entry and start, a centre airbag between the front seats for enhanced safety, and the intuitive new 3rd generation MBUX infotainment system. Our test vehicle, priced at $84,987, included the sporty AMG package along with other premium options, showcasing the extensive customization available. While the fully loaded GLC 350e might seem a little pricey, you have to remember it is a Benz, and one that will allow for a lot of savings at the gas pumps.

The GLC350e Cabin: Modern Luxury and Practicality

Step inside the GLC 350e, and you’ll find a welcoming 5-passenger cabin that offers good space for its class. The interior strikes a beautiful balance, blending classic Mercedes luxury with futuristic touches. I particularly appreciate that the seat controls remain conveniently located on the door panels.

The central focus is the 11.9” touchscreen tablet that houses all vehicle and infotainment controls. While Mercedes has opted for a button-less approach for HVAC and audio controls, relying heavily on the touchscreen and voice commands (“Hey Mercedes” controls most functions), some users, like me, might prefer the tactile feedback of physical buttons. Our Pinnacle trim test vehicle came fully loaded with all safety systems, providing comprehensive peace of mind. The optional AMG package further enhances the interior with deep contoured front seats, a flat-bottomed steering wheel, and subtle AMG logos throughout. Rear seat passenger room is adequate, though a couple more inches would be ideal, but the contoured seatbacks smartly allow for better leg and knee room.

One aspect of the GLC 350e that I don’t appreciate is that the steering wheel’s heat system is linked to the seat; if you want the steering wheel heat to be on, you have to have the seat heat on too. I prefer the old system of having a button on the steering column. Not everything needs to be connected.

Finally, the cargo area is generous, easily accommodating hockey equipment with room to spare for additional items, making it highly practical for active families.

Styling: Unmistakably a Benz

Visually, the PHEV GLC maintains the sophisticated aesthetic of the gas-powered GLC. Distinguishing features include subtle “e” badging and the option of different wheel designs. Of course, the presence of two distinct port openings—one for fuel and one for the plug-in—is a clear indicator of its hybrid nature. The GLC 350e is a truly beautiful SUV, retaining the characteristic elegance and class associated with the Mercedes-Benz brand. The gloss black grille and redesigned LED headlamps create a sharp and modern front end. With its sleek contours, especially when paired with the AMG package, the GLC 350e presents a strong and sporty presence on the road.

Final Thoughts: The Benchmark for PHEV Range

The Mercedes-Benz GLC 350e stands out as an ideal compact SUV for a multitude of reasons, but its most compelling attribute is undoubtedly its amazing electric-only range. This is a luxury SUV that genuinely delivers on the promise of a PHEV, allowing most daily drives to be completed with little to no fuel consumption. If you’re in the market for a premium SUV that offers an exceptional balance of luxury, performance, and groundbreaking electric range, the GLC 350e is an absolute must-see. Take it for a test drive; it may just tick all the boxes for you.
