National Conventions bring road closures to Cleveland, Philadelphia

Drivers headed to Cleveland or Philadelphia in the coming days should be prepared for road closures in the areas.

The Republican National Convention starts 19 July in Cleveland, and the Democratic National Convention will run July 25-28 in Philadelphia.

Many roads and streets around the Quicken Loans Arena and Progressive Field near downtown Cleveland will be shut down or restricted through Thursday, July 21.

The Associated Press reported that large trucks will be detoured from Interstate 90 near Progressive Field.

According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, anti-Donald Trump protests began Sunday night. However, there were no major street shutdowns reported.

The U.S. Secret Service recently announced that there will also be several road closures next week in Philadelphia. Roads will begin shutting down July 23 and will include some ramp shutdowns on I-95 near the Sports Complex. I-95 commercial vehicle restrictions will be coordinated between the Pennsylvania State Police, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and local jurisdictions.

Beginning at noon on July 23 until midday on July 29, commercial vehicles weighing more than 5 tons will be prohibited from traveling on Interstate 95 between Exit 13 and Exit 22. In addition, the northbound and southbound entrance ramps to I-95 and Exit 13 and Exit 22 will be closed to commercial vehicles that weigh more than 5 tons. Large trucks will be directed to use arterial roads to reach either I-95 north or south beyond Exit 13 or Exit 22.

The I-76 exit ramp will be closed daily July 25-29 between the hours of 2 p.m. and 2 a.m.
