US Route 1 Florida most deadly

US Route 1 Florida most deadly

According to Geotab’s data, U.S. Route 1 along Florida’s Atlantic coastline is America’s deadliest highway. The 545-mile stretch of highway runs from Key West to the Georgia state line.

Geotab has calculated 1,011 crashes in the past 10 years, 1,079 fatalities, and a crash rate of 2.8 deaths per fatal crash for the portion of highway in Florida, the highest in the nation in each category.

The top 10 deadliest highways according to Geotab’s data are:
1 U.S. Route 1 in Florida
2 Interstate 40 in Tennessee
3 Interstate 40 in New Mexico
4 Interstate 65 in Alabama
5 U.S. Route 90 in Louisiana
6 U.S. Route 83 in Texas
7 Interstate 40 in Arizona
8 Interstate 5 in Washington
9 Interstate 95 in South Carolina
10 Interstate 95 in North Carolina

The above list accounts for only stretches of highway that run the length of individual states. Geotab collected data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Federal Highway Administration to determine the deadliest highway in each state.

Since the data is measured by volume rather than vehicle-miles-traveled per capita or VMT per 100 million miles traveled, heavily populated states top the list. Florida, Texas and California hold the top three spots while Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Minnesota are the bottom three.

Several highways on the list run through multiple, connected states. For example, Interstate 80 was deemed the deadliest highway in Wyoming, Nebraska and Iowa; it was U.S. Route 2 in North Dakota and Montana; and Interstate 40 in California, Arizona and New Mexico.
